Why glass needs separate consideration
Glass is heavier than it looks: a 2.5 sq m pane with 8 mm thickness weighs about 40 kg. At the same time, glass is expensive, scratch-prone and barely repairable after breakage.
Suction lifters grip without scratches and distribute the load. They are standard for transporting windows, shower partitions, glass doors and conservatory glazing.
Preparing the pane
Choosing a suction lifter
For a 40 kg pane, a handheld with a 200 mm suction surface and at least 100 kg rated load is sufficient. For larger panes or transport over longer distances, two devices or a set are better.
With coated or satin-finished glass, adhesion may be lower. Check with a short test pull before lifting.
Common mistakes
The most common mistake is placing it over an edge: if the pad overhangs, it loses contact area. Keep at least 5 cm away from the edge.
Another mistake is setting it down without securing it first. A glass pane tips over quickly if it only rests on one point.
