Why large format is different
A 120 x 60 cm large porcelain stoneware slab weighs between 15 and 25 kg depending on thickness, while a 320 x 160 cm slab weighs over 100 kg. Such loads cannot be guided cleanly either by hand at the edge or with a small manual suction lifter.
At the same time, large-format tiles require an almost level surface. The adhesive must be applied over the full area, otherwise voids form. This is exactly where vacuum lifters and vibrating tools come in.
The tool list
The process
First check the substrate: level, clean, load-bearing. Then dry-fit the tile and determine the cuts. Apply adhesive with a suitable notch, fully covering the edge area.
Lift the tile with two suction lifters, bring it into position and set it down carefully. Use the vibrating tool to spread the adhesive. Then level and align the joints.
Common mistakes
Too little adhesive: with large format, full-surface adhesion is crucial. A notched trowel alone is often not enough, the adhesive must also be spread over the whole surface.
No reserve at the rated load: anyone lifting a 60 kg slab with a 100 kg rated load is working without a buffer. Twice the rated load is better.
No levelling system: Without levelling, lippage and height offset occur between the panels.
