Tile levelling: systems, tools and process

Levelling systems prevent lippage between panels. We present the common systems.

Why levelling

A height offset, or lippage, quickly appears between two tiles. It is visible, can be felt and is a sign of poor workmanship. Levelling systems press adjacent tiles to the same level.

Especially with large format and uneven substrates, levelling is a must.

The systems

  • Clamping system: bracket under the tile, wedge presses the tile down, then detach.
  • Spindle system: threaded rod with plate, even pressure, more control.
  • Pliers system: retaining clips and a setting or pair of pliers, quick and inexpensive.
  • Notched tile trowel with a grooved pattern to match the tile.
  • Procedure

Apply adhesive, position the panel, press lightly with a rubber mallet. Place the levelling aid under the joint, align the panel, then tighten. Remove excess after drying.

For large-format tiles, also spread the adhesive with a vibrating tool so that no voids are left.

    Avoid mistakes

  • Do not load too early, allow the adhesive to cure.
  • Choose wedges and brackets to match the system.
  • Do not over-tension, otherwise the tiles will break.
  • Do not forget adhesive tape and edge insulation.
