Sizing the rated load: how much headroom you really need

Why double the weight is the rule of thumb and when you need even more.

Estimating slab weight

Ceramic and porcelain weigh about 2.3 kg per litre of volume. A 120 x 60 x 1 cm slab comes to roughly 17 kg, a 320 x 160 x 1.2 cm slab to over 100 kg.

Estimate roughly and round up. Underestimating the weight means choosing too weak a unit.

Double the weight as a minimum

Double the rated load is the common rule of thumb. It covers small knocks, a slight tilt and fading vacuum.

For overhead work, rough surfaces or damp pads, increase the headroom further.

Headroom in numbers

An 80 kg slab calls for at least 160 kg rated load, better 200 kg. For a 120 kg slab, 240 kg is the minimum and 300 kg the safe choice.

Our rated load filters help narrow the dataset to the right range.
